April on the ISSUES

Last night at the FCPS Board of Education meeting the Vaccinate or Test to Play policy was revoked.
New BoE President, Brad Young brought the issue to the table for a vote and all but one current member of the board voted to flip the policy.
The discussion prior to the vote was eye opening. I believe we are starting to see an awakening of the minds that are supposed to be representing our children, parents and teachers.
It is important to note that this policy should have never passed in the first place. There was no public comment taken prior to voting. In fact, parents were not made aware of the policy at all.
Due to multiple parents, including myself, standing up and speaking at meetings since this policy passed, the board could not ignore how serious we all are when it comes to our children. We CAN make a difference. We WILL be heard. I will stand with with you!
There is much work to be done and now is the time.
Congratulations to all the children who can now play sports without fear of being discriminated against.
Congratulations to all the parents who took a stand for their children.
Recent and reoccurring issues within FCPS are coming to the surface. Dr. Alban has been put on administrative leave due to the DOJ's recent case with FCPS. The BoE has a new President and Vice President. There are policies being revoked that should have never been approved in the first place.

The time to speak up is now. We have their attention. If there are any issues you see that you want discussed, I will be attending every BoE meeting and will be your voice if you do not feel that you can speak for yourself.
My work for you as a board member starts now.
Special Meeting on Staffing
On November 15th the BoE held a special meeting to address FCPS serious staffing issues and the stress it has been putting on our teachers and staff members.
I bared witness to many teachers and staff members giving their heartfelt emotional speeches with several ways that the board could assist in making their work lives and ability to properly educate possible.
I stood up and spoke on behalf of the teachers AND the parents, but honestly mostly on how these issues are affecting our children.
During Monday night's BoE meeting several motions were passed to start healing some of the issues and help our teachers and staff feel more supported and heard.
I feel this is a step in the right direction. There is still a lot of work to be done. The board listened to the teachers and responded quickly.
Here are the motions that were approved by the board.

On MASKING our Children:
As long as Covid continues to be a fact of life, Parents, Staff and Students have the right to choose In-School or Remote Classes.
Those who prefer In School Classes should NOT be forced to succumb to unreasonable restrictions.
Those who require a higher level of safety must have the ability to participate in Remote Classes.
Therefore, we must create adequate capacity for Remote Classes.
This will allow for ALL who prefer the safety of remote schooling to participate, and remove the burdon of extreme restrictions for those who prefer the Classroom setting.
An added bonus to this solution would be a reduction to the over-crowding in our Schools.
